Yep. Comforting Sounds - Mew. Like, what Jonas said, it’s about losing the safety of childhood, and not wanting to grow up.
But here’s my interpretation. This song is about vulnerability.
"I don’t feel alright
In spite of these comforting sounds you make
I don’t feel alright
Because you make promises that you break”
He starts to wary about you. It’s all about arguing, crying. He doesn’t know, if you’re sincere or not, since you haven’t always kept your words.
"Into your house, why don’t we share our solitude?
Nothing is pure anymore but solitude.”
When in solitude, you and him are connected to each other. It makes he realized, all he wants is just to be alone with someone else, with you.
"It’s hard to make sense, feels as if I’m sensing you through a lens."
But, again, he doesn’t understand what just happened. He feels you haven’t completely opened up to him, like there’s a filter between your true self and what you show him.
"If someone else comes, I’d just sit here listening to the drums."
if the bond between you and him is to be interrupted, permanently or momentarily, he’d go back to passively listening to the world, making none of his own noise.
"Previously I never called it solitude."
Even he gets in loneliness again, he does know that is the best thing to do for his sake.
"And probably you know all the dirty shows I’ve put on.
Blunted and exhausted like anyone.
Honestly I tried to avoid it.
He realized you were always there when he became so numb. When he’s hurting you, he’s hurting his self. He knew, you were so much hurt that he couldn’t bear. But unfortunately, he’s losing control.
"Back when we were kids, we would always know when to stop.
And now all the good kids are messing up.
Nobody has gained or accomplished anything.”
He used to know when he should stop being fake and vulnerable. But he has been through a tough time. He’s messed up to deal with his pasts. That costs his social skills blunted. And that isolation he imposes on himself from others does not do any good.
To me, it’s a song about someone in limbo, emotional limbo, talking about his mistakes, talking maybe as if he is judging himself and the whole situation. But, it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.
And the music makes me feel nostalgic. It’s flawless from start to finish. All the voices, the instrumental parts… It’s sad in good way. I teared up for the first time I heard this.
So, that’s my interpretation. I know everybody has their own thoughts. But hope you have a good time while listen this song like mine.
